KUCHING: The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) International Nanoelectronic Conference (INEC) 2019 at Pullman Kuching recently involved delegates from 15 countries.

It was organised by IEEE  Singapore Section and IEEE Malaysia Sarawak Subsection.

A press release said the three-day event held in collaboration with Sarawak Convention Bureau also involved technical sponsors Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Nanyang Technology University Singapore, and Chang Gung University Taiwan.

The organising committee comprised professors from Taiwan, China, India, Singapore, and Malaysia, who were assisted by Swinburne students led by the university’s School of Engineering deputy head Dr Chua Hong Siang.

The conference featured keynote speakers Shinshu University, Japan distinguished professor Dr Morinobu Endot; Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Canada professor and director Dr Federico Rosei; University of Cambridge, United Kingdom professor Dr Gehan Amaratunga; and Technische Universität Wien, Austria professor Dr Siegfried Selberherr.

The delegates were from Algeria, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

They presented on topics such as nanoelectronics, low-dimensional materials, nanophotonics, nanomedicine, and carbon materials.

There was also a display of high-end advanced equipment by several vendors alongside oral and poster sessions.

The Best Paper Award went to Dr Ong Sheau Wei from the National University of Singapore for her paper ‘Photo-Induced Electron Transfer from Hematite and Zinc Oxide Nanostructures to Cytochrome C: Systems Applicable to Spintronics’, and Lucivaldo Reis Menezes from Federal University of ABC, Brazil for his paper ‘In-Situ Real Time Observation of Sn-Rich Dots and Wires Evolution during Annealing of Compressively Strained GeSn Epitaxial Films’.

Each winner received US$100 sponsored by the IEEE Nanotechnology Council USA.

IEEE Swinburne Sarawak’s active participation in various projects with IEEE Malaysia Sarawak Subsection gives students an opportunity to network and get involved with technical and local communities.

Among their collaborations include an alternative lighting project for generating sustainable energy in Kampung Salak; robotics competition to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Sarawak; and public seminar on nanoscience.

IEEE INEC 2019 is an international platform to discuss recent advances in the areas of nanoelectronics, nanodevices, and nanosystems.

This year’s conference was the ninth in a series of successful conferences initiated by the Nanotech Chapter of IEEE Singapore Section since 2006.

Carrying the theme ‘Nanoelectronics and Digital Applications’, the series focuses on translating research outcomes into real applications.
