KUCHING: SJK Chung Hua No. 3 will be looking to defend their title at Sarawak Youth Wushu Championship which will be held at SJK Chung Hua No. 4 school hall from Aug 11 to 12.

They were the overall champions in the first edition of the competition in 2015 where they amassed 194 points to finish ahead of SJK Chung Hua No. 5 and SJK Chung Hua No. 6.

This year, the 27-member team is led by teacher in charge of wushu Choo Lee Ling.

SJK Chung Hua No. 5 and SJK Chung Hua No. 6 are expected to once again challenge for the top honour while SJK Sam Hap Hin may spring some surprises as they are sending 20-strong contingent to the two-day meet organised by SJK Chung Hua No.4 Wushu Club.

In the secondary schools section, SMK Kuching High will also be eager to retain their title after winning in the first edition with 185 points.

Other teams in this category include Borneo International School, St Joseph’s Private School, SMK Sungai Tapang, Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, Chung Hua Middle School No. 3, SMK Arang Road, SMK Kuching High, SMK St Thomas, SMK Bandar Kuching No. 1 and SMK Anthony Sarikei.

Meanwhile, Miri is not sending any teams as they are also having a tournament there this weekend.

The competition is divided into various age groups and disciplines with more than 100 events to be competed.

The main objective of the championship is to enable the participants to gain additional co-curriculum points which are important and useful when applying for universities entry.

Other objectives are to provide a platform for the young athletes to gain exposure and improve their standard, and to further promote the Chinese tradition and culture through wushu.

The top three teams in the primary school and secondary school sections will receive trophies in this competition.

Minister of Education, Science and Technological research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong has been invited to officiate at the opening on Aug 10.
