BAU: A 19-year-old youth who doused a car, the walls and the front gate of a house in Kampung Stenggang here yesterday with flammable liquid before igniting it with a lighter, has been slapped with three charges.

The incident caused injuries to two individuals.

The youth is alleged to have threatened to burn the car following a family squabble over the vehicle, which later turned into a fiery argument.

He is charged under Section 327 and Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 7 of the Explosives Act.

According to Bau District police chief DSP Poge Nyaon, the unemployed youth was arrested at a house in Kampung Stenggang yesterday, and then brought to Bau police station for further action.

Under Section 327 of the Penal code, the offender could be jailed up to 10 years and given 10 strokes of the rotan, upon being found guilty.

On the other hand, Section 506 of the Penal Code provides imprisonment of up to seven years upon conviction, while Section 7 of Explosives Act provides imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine, or both, upon conviction. It is claimed that the youth insisted to drive his father’s car, despite being disallowed by his father.

“The youth’s brother, aged 26, and his 25-year-old brother-in-law also refused to hand him the car keys, which allegedly prompted the youth to utter threats of burning and bombing the car,” said Poge in a statement yesterday.

The youth then left the house but returned soon after that, with a gas canister containing flammable liquid.  In seeing this, both his brother and brother-in-law attempted to stop him but they were doused with the flammable liquid.

It was then when their younger sister called the Fire and Rescue Department for assistance.
