SIBU: Sarawak Volleyball Association (Sava) president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming has spoken on the importance of referees exercising impartiality.

“Often, the teams that lose will blame the referees. It is therefore imperative that referees make their decisions with impartiality,” he said when speaking at the closing of the National-Level Volleyball Referees Course held here yesterday morning.

Among those present were Sava deputy president Dr Gregory Hii, Sibu Volleyball Association president Dr William Ting and chairman Dato Moh Wung Ming.

A total of 27 referees attended the three-day programme organised by Sava in collaboration with Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava).

17 were from Sarawak, five from Sabah, three from Labuan and one each from Negri Sembilan and Johor.

The facilitators were Andrew Ting, Joseph Gerard and Chai Wee Ming.

Meanwhile, Lau observed that the course was long overdue and should be organised more regularly so that Malaysia have sufficient and qualified referees for local and international matches.

He recalled that the last time such a course was staged here was 10 years ago in 2009.

“Sava will always support, morally and financially, to ensure that the standard of the referees will be of international calibre. Hopefully, we do not have to wait for 10 more years to stage the course again, “ he added.

He also expressed the hope for more referees to take up the challenge of joining the national-level course.
