PDP: Expel Zakir or charge him in court

SIBU: Progressive Democtatic Party (PDP) yesterday condemned Indian Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik over his recent remarks calling for the expulsion of the Chinese and Indian communities from the country.

In its press statement yesterday, the party said if the federal government continues to refuse to expel Zakir, then the preacher should at the very least be charged in court over his extremely provocative statements.

“Zakir Naik has committed an offence under the Sedition Act. If Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad feels that he (Zakir) will face the death penalty in India if deported, then we must charge and jail him (Zakir).” PDP also questioned the rationale of letting Zakir, who is a wanted criminal in India, remain in the country where he had done nothing except jeopardise harmony and security.

“This is unbelievable. Even ministers in the cabinet have called for his deportation. How come he is still walking free to stir up sentiments?” The party said Zakir should not be regarded as a preacher; rather it was more correct to brand him as a ‘destructor’.

“The Malays, Chinese and Indians have worked together for the independence of Malaysia.

“How could Malaysians be described (by Zakir) as foreigners? Malaysia is a country where we have built a stable home.

“We cannot let Zakir Naik, who has nothing to do with our country, talk nonsense about us.” PDP said the country must act fast to prevent this ‘cancerous cell from spreading’.

“The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government has the duty to protect the rights of Malaysians. They should not let a foreigner challenge our rights and unity.” It said if PH continued to harbour such a dangerous man, it would mean the federal government did not acknowledge the contribution of the Chinese and Indian communities in nation building.

“This will only make the people lose confidence in the Pakatan Harapan government. Progressive Democratic Party will not tolerate the dangerous statements of Zakir Naik. We call for action against him.”
