KUCHING: The state Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture will reconsider the plan to turn Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Garden at Jalan Bukit Siol into a bird park, says  minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said the previous plan to turn the site into a bird park never materialised, but commended DBKU for having maintained the garden well throughout the years.

“I had mentioned about this (turning the garden into a bird park) to the chief minister the other day. This place will make a good site for a bird park due to its location and environment,” said Abdul Karim when met at the park yesterday.

He spoke to reporters after taking part in the filming of horror flick ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ at Bukit Siol in Petra Jaya.

Commenting on the film, the minister said it was a joint venture between the Sarawak government through his ministry and Art Production 2020 Sdn Bhd.

The film stars popular actress Uqasha Senrose and actor Syafie Naswip.

According to Abdul Karim, the film is based on the history of the Melanau in Sarawak and has been filmed in several locations in the state such as Mukah, Siburan, Sarawak Cultural Village, Santubong and DBKU Garden.

“As this movie is a collaboration with the state government, I hope it will get good reception from members of the public. The government always supports films that promote Sarawak,” he said.

Meanwhile, when asked on the development of the ‘White Rajah’ film, Abdul Karim said it was another of the Sarawak government’s efforts through his ministry to promote Sarawak through movies.

“When the state government sponsors movies such as the White Rajah, it can attract visitors to the interesting places featured in the film too.”
