KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit is calling on the Health Ministry and state Health Department to supply Kapit Hospital with rabies vaccine for the convenience of local folk who may fall victim to animal bites.

According to him, those who have been bitten in Kapit currently have to be referred to Sibu Hospital to get
their rabies shot, making it not only inconvenient for the patient in terms of time spent travelling but also incurring high cost.

“It is necessary for Kapit Hospital to have its own stock of rabies vaccine, especially as three samples taken previously from dogs here had tested positive for the virus.

“While the Veterinary Department provides free rabies vaccination for dogs and cats, I would like to call upon the Health Ministry and state Health Department to have rabies vaccine ready in the event someone is bitten,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Jamit also advised pet owners in Kapit to ensure their dogs or cats are vaccinated to prevent the spread of rabies, and called on dog owners in particular to apply for a licence from Kapit District Council.

“It’s sad to note that only a few owners here have actually applied for a dog licence from the council,” he said, while extending his appreciation to all personnel involved in the operation to cull strays, as part of the statewide anti-rabies effort.
