Fire destroys four houses, 17 made homeless

Firemen fight the fire which is already at its height.

SIBU: Four houses at Amoy Road here were destroyed by fire about 8.30am yesterday, making 17 people in four families homeless.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department acting deputy director Tiong Ling Hii said they received a distress call at 8.33am, and immediately dispatched 21 firemen in three fire engines from Sibu and Sungai Merah stations to the scene.

“When they arrived about 10 minutes later, the fire had already destroyed 90 per cent of the houses,” he said in a statement received here yesterday.

The firemen managed to put the fire under control at 9.08am. No casualties were reported, he said, and they were still investigating the cause of the fire.
