KUCHING: Sarawak are looking forward to a good outing in the National Wushu Championship at Dewan Serbaguna Johor Jaya in Johor from Sept 13 to 15.

The state’s challenge is shouldered by 12 athletes including five who have competed and won medals at the last Sukma in Perak last year.

Clement Thian Fung Seng is spearheading the boys challenge and his teammates are Danny Ling Hang Kee, Johan Wong Wei Xiang, Edison Wong Sing Yen, Mo King Ying and Dickson Teo Shoon Jie.

Leading the girls challenge is Yong Arifah Khairul Kok while her teammates are Stephanie Ngu Cai Ern, Landy Liew Jia
Yee, Ann Sim Jia Eng, Carmen Chaw Jia Min and Vanessa Lim Song Yi.

“We are not setting any medal target for the team because the majority of the athletes are new,” said team manager Jong Chin Wei.

“We are hoping that the previous Sukma medallists Clement Thian, Stephanie Ngu and Yong Arifah will deliver some medals for us,” he added.

According to Jong, the national outing is more for the athletes’ exposure and also to get acclimatised to the venue and competition environment as it is also the venue for next year’s Sukma Johor and the Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM)-WFM Wushu Championships.

Accompanying the team are Sarawak State Sports Council wushu head coach Yoong Thong Foong, coach Lau Hui Wei, development coach from China Zheng Shaoyi and taolu judge Goh Swee Li.
