SIBU: Sarawak Independence Alliance (SIA) will host a peaceful gathering at Sibu Gateway on Monday morning in conjunction with the formation of Malaysia 56 years ago.

According to a spokesman, Jarau Adau, the gathering is to remind Sarawakians about the formation of Malaysia  56 years ago involving North Borneo (Sabah), Singapore, Malaya, and Sarawak.

“After being in the federation for 56 years, have Sarawakians been fairly treated under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he asked at a press conference yesterday, which was also attended by colleagues  Tham Weng Kwang and Ling Tai Young.

Jarau added that they would also fight for Native Customary Land Rights (NCR), 20 per cent oil and gas royalty, and education autonomy.

Those wanting to join are urged to assemble at Sibu Town Square (Phase 2) from 6am to 7.30am that day.

“We will gather there before marching to Sibu Gateway at 7.45am. We may bring along our own banners to air our grievances in relations to our rights.”

There is no restriction on attire to be worn but black is preferable to mark the occasion, which has the theme ‘One people, One Voice and free Sarawak’, he said.

He expected about 500 people to be there, including those from Sarikei and from as far as Kuching and Miri.
