KUCHING: The state Drainage and Irrigation Department will be split in two, one for drainage and the other Irrigation, to better manage the two important issues, especially in urban areas.

Irrigation comes under Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, and drainage under Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said at a farewell dinner for the former datuk bandar of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, and mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk James Chan on Friday.

Abang Johari shakes hands with Chan (second right) after presenting him and Abdul Wahap (second left) a memento each, while Jaul (left) and Dr Sim look on.

“There already exists a drainage masterplan, even during the time of the two former mayors. But, this time the focus will be on urban centres including Kuching, to alleviate flash floods,” he
said.

He also announced that the state government would install the latest safety gadgets at tourist spots like Kuching Waterfront to transform Kuching into a Smart City.

“Similarly, public transportation will also be improved, and the traffic flow managed well to provide comfortable ride for all road users.

“I have formed a ministry specifically for public transport under Datuk Lee Kim Shin to manage the traffic and develop new methods for more comfortable journey for road users.

“These are what I plan to implement for Kuching, and I hope Kuching folk will cooperate with the new DBKU datuk bandar and MBKS mayor to continue the legacy of their predecessors.”

At the event, Abang Johari thanked Abang Abdul Wahap and Chan for their contribution over the years in making Kuching into what it is today.

“Both have earnestly carried out their duties and responsibilites well and also brought about many changes to Kuching North and Kuching South.”

He also welcomed the new mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and datuk bandar Datu Junaidi Reduan.

He believed the duo would do their job well based on their experience.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and State Secretary Datu Jaul Samion were among those present at the dinner.
