Fire destroys ten shophouses in Lawas

MIRI: Ten shophouses were destroyed in a fire in Lawas town last night.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Lawas Fire and Rescue station (Bomba Lawas) chief, Zaki Husin when contacted today, said they received a distress call on the incident at 9.15pm.

“A team of 26 personnel including two from Lawas Airport Fire and Rescue services was rushed to the scene.

“Upon arriving at the scene, we found that a row of three-storey shophouses were engulfed in fire and that a few shop lots have been completely destroyed,” Zaki said.

The team immediately carried out firefighting to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby units, he said.

Zaki added that they managed to control the fire at 10.30pm.

The operation ended at 8.37am today.
