MIRI: Villagers in the highlands of northern Sarawak have experienced temperatures as low as 13ºC since last weekend when most other areas in Sarawak suffered from hot and hazy weather.

The lowest temperature was recorded in Long Semado around 3am on Monday.

Lisa Buing, a villager from Buduk Nur in Ba Kelalan, said the coldest temperatures were experienced in the wee hours.

“The temperature dropped to 14ºC early in the morning,” he said when contacted.

According to him, the drop in temperature could be attributed to the prolonged dry spell, adding that Ba Kelalan has not experienced rain since three weeks ago.

He said the temperature during the day was between 26ºC and 28ºC, but this would begin to drop after 6pm.

It is understood that Bario in the Kelabit highlands and Long Banga in upper Baram also experienced lower
temperatures, with the lowest being 15ºC.

Returning resident Wendy Wee, who was in Long Banga with her family on Monday, said the weather was unlike her previous trips to the village.

“I have never experienced very cold weather whenever I go to Long Banga. But this time, we could not sit outside at night because it was very cold,” she said.

Wendy also believed that the dry weather could have caused the colder-than-usual temperatures.

A weather forecast predicted that Ba Kelalan, Long Semado, Bario, and the surrounding areas would experience cooler temperatures until the end of next week.
