SIBU: A policeman was forced to open fire on a four-wheel-drive vehicle after its driver stopped and attempted to reverse it into a police patrol car at Kemuyang Road traffic light junction here on Sept 16.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said they had arrested the 43-year-old driver from Bintangor.

The suspect had attempted to beat the red light at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Road traffic light junction at about 12.50pm.

Two policemen who were patrolling the area saw what happened and subsequently gave chase, he said.

“They signalled for the driver to stop his vehicle.

“When the car reached Kemuyang Road traffic light junction, the driver braked suddenly and reversed his vehicle which almost hit the police car.

“One of the policemen then opened fire, shooting out the rear left tire on the vehicle,” he said in a statement today.

According to Stanley, the driver did not stop even after the police fired the shot, and continued speeding off towards Sibu/Bintulu Road.

He later stopped the vehicle at Mile 12, Ulu Oya Road.

“The suspect also insulted and showed obscene gestures at the policemen.

“He refused to cooperate when one of the policemen wanted to introduce himself to him.

“Instead, he got in the car and sped off again,” he said.

Stanley said the suspect was later arrested at Mile 14, Ulu Oya Road with assistance from two other patrol cars and brought to Sibu central police station.

His urine test has also tested positive for drugs and the suspect is currently being remanded.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in discharging his duty, Section 307 of the same act for attempted murder and also Section 509 of the same act for insulting the policemen.
