KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government has approved an allocation of RM78 million for Sabah to carry out repair works on 30 old and dilapidated schools in the state.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said yesterday that the funding was for this year. He also said that they have adopted a new formula whereby the Sabah government will have an active role in monitoring the work status of the schools that are being repaired or replaced with a new one.

He said that this was to avoid being informed that the repair works have already been done, but in reality it is otherwise.

“I hope this will benefit the schools,” he said.

Lim also said that Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie Apdal had requested for more fundings to repair the dilapidated schools, some of which are in dire state.

“The Prime Minister (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) has instructed me to find the money so we can start the work,” he said.

He said that on August 30, his ministry had issued the approval for the RM78 million allocation for Sabah.

Lim was speaking after attending a dialogue with industry players in Sabah which was held in conjunction with the upcoming Budget 2020.

Shafie, who was also present at the event, said that the dialogue was a new approach adopted by the Federal Government so that the voice of the people and industry players could be heard and allow the government to consider their proposals in the upcoming Budget 2020.

He said the interaction is not merely for allocation sake but also to address other problems such as policies that are not industry growth-friendly.
