Contraband beer, cigarettes worth RM3.8 mln seized

MIRI: The 12th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) and Customs Department seized contrabands worth more than RM3.8 million including tax on Tuesday, the biggest seizure here so far.

Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, state GOF commander SAC Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said the contrabands were seized in three separate raids in the city.

“The first one was carried out at a premises in Jalan Grand Park in Riam, where 3,513 boxes of beer were seized. Also arrested was a 44-year-old caretaker of the premises.

The team then moved to another location, a house in Jalan Nasturium in Ria, where they seized 6,280 cartons of cigarettes of various brands.

“The third raid was carried out in Kuala Baram where 7,250 cartons of cigarettes and 2,691 boxes of beers kept inside three large containers were seized,” Khaw said.

He said the items was worth RM3,825,280 including tax.

The contrabands are meant for distributions to Lawas, Limbang, Sibu and here, and the case is being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967.

Khaw called on the public to provide information to the authorities if they suspected any premises or individuals selling contraband items.

His deputy ACP Kaderi Said and PGA Miri commanding officer Supt Tan Hiap Seng were also present at the press conference.
