Police nab suspect in attempted cable theft

The suspect is remanded for further investigation.

KUCHING: A man was apprehended, while another got away after their attempt to steal electric cables in Jalan Demak Jaya here on Tuesday night was foiled.

Kuching district police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said that he received a report regarding the incident from a security guard working for a VIP who lived near the scene at around 9.10pm.

Following the report, Awang said that a few personnel rushed to the scene.

“We were informed that there were two suspects, one who had climbed the electrical pole while the other waited on a motorbike. One of the suspects was successfully apprehended while the other managed to flee the scene,” he said in a statement.

The 24-year-old suspect was handed over to the police for further action.

Awang added that checks conducted on the suspect found that he had a criminal record.

“The suspect had been apprehended before for suspicion of being involved in a break-in and theft,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 and 511 of the Penal Code.

“The suspect will be remanded for further investigation, and we are looking for his accomplice, known as ‘Boboi’,” Awang added.
