SEMPORNA: Two persons were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel yesterday for carrying out fish-bombing activity.

MMEA Semporna maritime director Commander Norrimi Hassan said the two men in their 30s tried to flee but were stopped in the waters off Maiga Island in the 7am incident.

Equipment for carrying out fish-bombing were found on the pump-boat while the two persons were also without any identification documents, Norrimi said, adding that the case would be investigated under the Fishery Act 1985 and Immigration Act 1969.

He said this case is the third for Semporna MMEA this year.

Norrimi reiterated that the MMEA is committed in its effort to curb fish-bombing activities in Semporna waters and will be stepping up  patrols.

He urged those with information on illegal maritime activity to contact Semporna MMEA at 089-782619 or MERS 999.
