KUCHING: An American tourist was killed while his wife suffered a broken finger after they were knocked down while crossing Jalan Padungan, here yesterday.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department head Supt Alexson Naga Chabu who confirmed the matter said Mark Sigmund Neustadt, 62, and his 48-year-old wife were crossing the road near a petrol station when they were hit by a multi-purpose vehicle driven by a 26-year-old man.

“Both victims were sent to Sarawak General Hospital where Mark succumbed to serious head injuries at 1.54am.

“His wife, also an American citizen, was transferred to a private hospital where she is currently warded for a fractured right thumb. She is still traumatised by what had happened,” he said.

Alexson added the driver, from Taman Malihah, Jalan Matang here, was not injured in the incident.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
