KUCHING: An electronic and electrical company has been charged in the Sessions Court today in connection with the fatal blast at CityONE Megamall here last December.

The company Sin Nyen Electronic and Electrical through a representative, pleaded not guilty before Sessions court judge Taufik Mohd alias Mohd Yusoff.

Taufik then fixed Oct 23 for pre-trial case management and ordered the accused company to be released on RM10,000 bail.

The Sessions Court judge also ordered the prosecution to draw a new charge so as to make it clearer and more comprehensive to understand.

The company is facing a charge framed under Section 15 (1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1994 that carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or two years’ imprisonment or both, upon conviction.

An individual sub-contractor has also been brought to another court today for his charge to be read before him over the same incident.

However, the court proceeding had to be postponed because the judge for his case was unavailable.

The 56-year-old contractor will be produced in court again on Oct 8.

It was claimed that the Dec 4 2018 blast occurred following a gas leak.

Three persons were killed in the blast, while 41 people were injured. Out of the 41 people injured, four persons were badly injured.

Department of Safety and Health officer Wilson Lee prosecuted while counsel Siew Chen Fui represented the company and counsel Voon Lee Shan represented the sub-contractor.
