CSM-ACE the right platform to address cyber security issues — Gobind

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2019 Cyber Security Malaysia – Awards, Conference & Exhibition (CSM-ACE) – which kicked off yesterday with the theme, “Cyber Defence” is the appropriate platform in addressing various issues to protect sensitive information and to safeguard assets.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the prestigious annual gathering of cybersecurity experts, industry leaders, tech investors, academia and government officials is an excellent avenue for information-sharing and ideas exchange on issues concerning global trends policy, capacity building, cyber threats as well as technology advancement.

“I foresee CSM-ACE will continue as a platform which connects people from various organisations across sectors and strengthens cybersecurity collaboration to achieve cyber defence.

“I hope that this event will be a springboard to foster collaboration and information-sharing,” he said in a video message which was screened at the opening ceremony of 11th CSM-ACE.

The event was officiated by Communications and Multimedia Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure and Digital Economy) Tan Chuan Ou here yesterday.

Also present at the event that ends on Sept 27 was CyberSecurity Malaysia chairman General Tan Sri Mohd Azumi Mohamed.

Gobind also thanked all the participants for their endless support, dedication and commitment in working together to ensure a safer cyber space now and in the future.

Meanwhile, Tan in his speech said in order to strengthen cyber security, Malaysia has to enhance the human aspects, the processes and technologies in detecting, diagnosing and deterring unwanted cyber operations.

He said according to the police, a total of 8,808 cyber crime cases ranging from love scam, e-Trade (online purchase) and telecommunication fraud were recorded in the first seven months of 2019 incurring losses amounting to an estimated RM331 million.

“We need to fortify protection of our cyber eco-system to counter ever-evolving cyber threats of the future.

The stability of the country’s digital eco-system will very much depend on its robust cyber security and defence capabilities,” he said.

CyberSecurity Malaysia today also introduced Coordinated Malware Eradication and Remediation Platform (CMERP), an automatic malware detection and alert system developed using local expertise through public-private collaboration.

Utilising advanced malware detection and quarantine technology, the CMERP system is expected to significantly reduce the impact of malware threats for organisations, especially the critical national information infrastructure (CNII) sectors.

CMERP incorporates smart security features to detect, alert and mitigate cyber threats automatically.

This is expected to raise the standard of cyber security and enhance safety of data and information in Malaysia.

The 11th edition of CSM-ACE 2019 is expected to attract over 5,000 local and international cyber security professionals, industry leaders, tech investors, academics and government officials.

Aside from the keynote address and panellist sessions,12 capacity building and training programmes, 50 exhibitors are also showcasing their innovative ICT products and services.

This year, there are eight satellite events featuring various fields in cyber security including a two-day job fair. — Bernama
