KUCHING: Police will continue to investigate the possibility of the existence of a drug processing laboratory in Sarawak as part of their fight against drug and substance abuse.

Sarawak deputy police commissioner Datuk Dev Kumar said so far, the police have yet to receive any information on drugs being processed in the state, stating that the drugs were brought in from neighbouring countries.

“So far, we have not arrested anyone for running a drug processing lab here,” Dev Kumar told a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah at her office, here today.

He said the police were constantly on alert despite no evidence showing the existence of a drug processing laboratory in Sarawak.

As a show of the police’s seriousness in tackling drug and substance abuse in Sarawak, Dev Kumar said he had given an instruction to the state Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) to increase their enforcement and be more aggressive in taking action.

Aside from that, Dev Kumar said the police were committed in helping the Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Ministry in handling cases pertaining to violence against women and children.

“We give commitment and assurance that we will help the ministry in the two issues raised; drugs and substance abuse, and violence against women and children.”

Also present during the press conference were Assistant Minister for Community Wellbeing Datuk Francis Harden Hollis and Assistant Minister for Family and Children Development Rosey Yunus.
