KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines yesterday said that it is supporting the repatriation of passengers from Spain to the UK after Thomas Cook ceased its operations Monday.
In a brief statement to Bernama International News Service, the national carrier said it is conducting the operation on behalf of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
For this purpose, Malaysia Airlines is utilising its Airbus 380 aircraft, it said.
However, Malaysia Airlines did not respond to queries on the number of passengers being repatriated by the airline and the duration of the airlines’ involvement in the operation.
Meanwhile, when contacted, British High Commission here refused to comment, and asked affected customers to refer to official statements available at https://thomascook.caa.co.uk/ The CAA said Monday that the Thomas Cook Group, including the UK tour operator and airline, has ceased trading with immediate effect.
All Thomas Cook bookings, including flights and holidays, have now been cancelled, affecting more than 150,000 of its customers abroad.
The repatriation programme will run over the next two weeks, from Sept 23 to Oct 6, with more than 1,000 flights planned.
On Monday, 64 flights were operated and successfully brought back more than 14,700 passengers. — Bernama
