KUCHING: Two male suspects aged 17 and 19 were arrested by the police for attempting to rob a 24-hour convenience shop at Kuching City Mall, Batu Kawah at around 11.30pm last night (Sept 26).

Padawan District police deputy chief DSP Merbin Lisa, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspects were armed with a machete and had their faces covered with shirts as they attempted the robbery.

Alone in the premise was the shop’s cashier – a foreign woman in her early 20’s.

“A nearby Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) who was alerted to the situation was despatched to the scene,” said Merbin in a statement today.

Realising the presence of the MPV, the suspects hurriedly jumped on a motorcycle and fled the scene.

The MPV gave chase and was joined by three personnel from the police’s Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB).

“The short chase ended with the capture and arrest of the two suspects,” said Merbin, adding that one of the suspects suffered a cut to his left ankle during the arrest.

Police also managed to seized the machete and the motorcycle that was used by the suspects in the attempted robbery.

Both suspects will also be investigated to check for involvement in other robbery cases involving 24-hour convenience shops during their remand.

The case will be investigated under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempt to commit robbery, a charge which carries a term of seven years in prison and a fine.

One of the suspects was revealed to have a past criminal record under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
