PDP Women wing wants party’s traditional seats to be returned

KUCHING: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Women wing has called on Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leadership to return the seats held by the party in the 10th State Election in 2011 which it said belonged to the party.

“With the State Election drawing nearer, PDP Women wishes to reaffirm PDP’s stance to field our candidates for all those seats that traditionally belong to PDP,” said the PDP Women chief Datuk Chiew Yen Chew in a statement yesterday.

PDP’s traditional seats based on Barisan Nasional (BN) seats sharing agreement in the 10th State election when it was known as Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) were Tasik Biru, Krian, Pakan, Meluan, Bekenu, Marudi and Ba Kelalan.

The 11th State Election in 2016 saw two seats Bekenu and Pakan contested under Barisan Nasional direct candidates and after the independent candidates who they joined  Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) bringing the seats to PBB.

“PDP Women shall continue to carry out activities with main focus in our party seats,” added Chew.

She also informed that PDP Women’s Welfare and Caring Committee is launching its Health Campaign Publicity in the next few days. The Campaign has been fixed for October 5 to 6 and October 18 to 20 in Sibu.

She added the Health Campaign will continue and to be carried out in November and December for Southern and Northern regions.

“The committee will also be giving foods and medical assistance including donating wheel chairs to those very poor and needy.

“Our ladies have been actively moving around in mainly rural areas collecting data and information on deprived and poverty families.

“In order to serve our communities, we have done our surveys in Julau, Bawang Assan and will continue to do in other parts of Sarawak,” she said.

On a related matter, she said PDP Women hope to see more women candidates in the next state election.

Chiew said  PDP Women already has a membership of 42,091 and in its meeting held yesterday among resolutions adopted is to actively recruit young members and to organise Ethnic Unity Gala Dinner in May next year,
