KUCHING: A chicken rice seller here lost RM27,000 to a Macau Scam on Monday.

Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said the 39-year-old woman had earlier received a call from a man, who claimed that he was a senior enforcement officer of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to him, the individual who identified himself as ‘Faizal Annuar’ had called the victim, alleging her of having involved in corruption, drugs, firearms and money laundering cases.

“The victim subsequently called ‘Inspector Amirul’ who then asked her to transfer the money from her bank account to the bank account number provided by the suspect to check if the victim was involved in such cases.

“The victim, however, realised that she had been cheated after updating his bank account and found that the money in his account had been reduced by RM27,000,” he said in a statement here today.

The victim then proceeded to lodge a police report on the incident for further investigation.

Meanwhile, Mustafa said some 100 cases of scam cases were reported throughout the state this year involving losses of up to RM6.3 million

In 2018, some 209 cases were reported with a total loss of RM10.3 million.

“In terms of arrests, 44 people had been arrested in 2019 compared to 47 in 2018,” he said.
