Grand celebration among events to mark TYT’s 83rd birthday

MIRI: Seven events including a grand celebration will be held here from Oct 11-13 in conjunction with Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s 83rd birthday.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip said after chairing a meeting on the preparations here yesterday that the celebration will begin with a thanksgiving prayer on Oct 11 at Masjid Darul Ehsan in Piasau Jaya, with more than 1,500 expected to attend including ministers and local leaders.

A parade will take place on Oct 12 at Miri Outdoor Stadium, involving over 4,000 people from more than 100 contingents.

Also taking place is a special fly-past comprising the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Fire and Rescue Department, Hornbill Skyways and Royal Malaysia Police.

Other interesting activities to be held at the stadium include human graphic performances by 800 performers to symbolise a birthday cake and other interesting formations, presentation of songs and others to be coordinated by Sarawak Arts Council (MSS).

An investiture ceremony will be held after the parade, followed by a grand state banquet to be held at Pullman Hotel.

The banquet will feature special performances by Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia from Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur and other top singers.

The public, meanwhile, will be treated to a ‘Konsert Rakyat’ the same evening at Coco Cabana, featuring invited performers including Ricky Andrewson, Melissa Francis, Bibiyanti, Siti Hajar, Raquel, Firdaus Materang and Norafizah Busman.

On Oct 13, a high tea reception will be hosted by Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM) during which the Head of State will present welfare aid to the underprivileged, followed by the launching and tour of the ‘Dirgahayu Exhibition’ at Pustaka Miri.
