KUCHING: A total of 108,880 sticks of cigarettes worth RM10,065.60 with unpaid Customs duty of RM72,867.36 were seized from an old vehicle, believed to be the hiding place of the contraband.

Sarawak Customs Department director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha, through a press statement, said the contraband were seized by the department’s enforcement team during a raid at Jalan Kapitan Chua Kam Boon in Lubok Antu, recently.

She said the team inspected a suspicious-looking old vehicle at a parking lot next to a shophouse in Jalan Kapitan Chua Kam Boon, and found the contraband inside the vehicle.

She said the case would be investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which provides for a fine 10 times the total value of the goods or RM100,000 whichever value is higher and not more than 20 times the amount of the Customs duty or RM500,000 whichever is higher, or a jail term of not less than six months and not more than five years, or both on conviction.
