Student detained for selling syabu to help family

LAHAD DATU: An 18-year-old student who allegedly sold drugs to help his family was arrested by police during Ops Tapis at Taman Panji area here on Monday.

District police chief ACP Nasri Mansor in a statement yesterday said that the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate was arrested after he was found in possession of 5.25 grams of drugs believed to be syabu estimated worth RM787.50 during the 3.30pm operation.

Nasri said  his men spotted the suspect who was in suspicious behavior and approached him. While introducing themselves, the suspect attempted to flee but was arrested.

“While conducting body search, the suspect handed a translucent plastic containing substance believed to be syabu and nine aluminium foils.

“The suspect was later taken to the Lahad Datu police headquarters  and  tested positive for drug abuse,” he said.

According to Nasri, further investigation revealed that the suspect who was a small-time drug dealer, obtained his supply from a man known as Abang at Kampung Puyut.

Police are looking for the syabu supplier.

Nasri said the suspect started drug trafficking early of September, this year after being influenced by his drug addict friends to find easy money for his family.

He added that the suspect lived with his family at Kampung Anjung Teduh, Sahabat 2 and had no past criminal record.

He will be investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
