Sopran receives award for donating 150 pints

KUCHING: Sopran Mohamad, a blood donor since 1996 received an award yesterday for donating a total of 150 pints.

He was among the 250 blood donors who received awards from Malaysian Red Cresent, Kuching District for donating 50 pints to 160 pints.

Sopran said it was a relative who encouraged him to bleed four times a year to save lives.

“I don’t smoke and I go jogging whenever I have time,” said the 46-year old who doesn’t have a special diet to donate regularly.

He will continue to donate blood and recalled a couple of times when the hospital’s blood bank called him to donate during emergencies.

MRC Kuching District chairman Datuk Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zain also presented awards to another 2,700 who donated between five and 45 pints at ceremony held in Crown Towers here.

MRC Kuching District recruitment services sub-committee chairman John Jong extended appreciation to all who donated a total of 22,911 pints last year, up three per cent from 2017.

“Collection from female donors increased by 10 per cent and collection from new blood donors increased 11 per cent.

“This is a good sign to show awareness of the importance of blood donation in Kuching District. Let us always work together to save valuable lives,” he added.
