JULAU: Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat gave personal donation of RM5,000 to the pupils of SK Nanga Serau, who lost all their belongings during a fire that struck their dormitories recently.

The money is meant for them to buy uniform, stationery and other schooling necessities.

When met by reporters at the school last Saturday, the assemblyman said he was happy that following his request, Yayasan Sarawak had agreed to chip in some assistance for the primary school.

According to him, the foundation would give RM200 to each of the affected pupils by next week.

Moreover, Yayasan Sarawak had also indicated that it would channel some contributions to SK Nanga Serau through its parent-teacher association (PTA).

However, Rolland reminded the PTA members that while the plight of their pupils affected by the fire remained the focus for now, they should also pay close attention to other requirements of the school.

“I would also request the relevant authorities to put SK Nanga Serau as a priority on the ‘Sarawak State Dilapidated Schools Repair Initiative’ list,” he told PTA members during his visit to the school.

He also hinted at allocating part of his future Rural Transformation Project (RTP) fund to build a multipurpose hall at the primary school.

According to SK Nanga Serau headmaster Abdul Razak Amin, fire razed the wooden dormitory blocks, which housed 41 pupils (21 boys and 20 girls) and two hostel management staff.

“Thanks to the fire drill programme that they took part in previously, they learned many aspects of basic fire safety and managed to escape to safety. However, they lost all their belongings in the fire,” he said.
