MIRI: The lack of facilities in rural schools should not hinder the growth of students but rather serve as motivation to push towards greater achievement, says Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

While acknowledging that rural schools are at a disadvantage compared to their urban counterparts, he nonetheless called on students in rural schools to make use of this disadvantageous situation to continue pushing and testing themselves.

“I’m aware that the lack or non-existence of basic facilities in very rural schools, coupled with their laid-back environment, indirectly hinders our young minds from pushing themselves to be competitive.

“But in fact, we could use this situation as an opportunity to continue testing and exploring ourselves, and to make the best choices available to us each day,” he said when officiating a dinner event in Daleh Long Pelutan, Baram recently.

The dinner was organised by the parent-teacher association of SK Long Miri to celebrate the school’s success in the Primary Schools Sports Council (MSSR) meet for middle Baram zone held this past weekend.

During the event, Dennis announced a government grant of RM20,000 to the school in response to a request for funds to upgrade and repair its sports facilities.

Among those present was Daleh Long Pelutan headman Tingang Pahang.
