KUCHING: With digital economy plans in the pipeline, Sarawak has now set its motion to not only achieving to be a developed state in 2030, but to transform itself into the ‘Bavaria’ of Asean.

Chief minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said Bavaria in Germany was one of the two regions in the European Union that determined the future of the union.

“The other one in Italy that is the Amelia region where you have Ducati, you have Lamborghini and Ferrari.

“You have all these brands, these are really the two regions that propel EU economy, it is my hope Sarawak becomes the Bavaria of Asean,” he said during his opening remarks at the Business Engagement Session, held by Sarawak Business Federation here yesterday.

Towards achieving this, Abang Johari said it needed the support of the public sector.

“I hope the public sector has one mind and one vision (as the government) and we transform Sarawak together,” he said.

Meanwhile, on a separate issue, commenting on the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 launched by the Federal government, recently, Abang Johari, although describing it as similar to Vision 2020, applauded some key differences introduced in the new economic masterplan.

“It’s the same like Wawasan 2020 to me, except the difference is they also include digital economy.

“That is something new, but in terms of principal it’s the same as Wawasan 2020.

“Hopefully it will benefit Sarawak,” he said briefly when met by the media. — Bernama
