New museum to feature history of Chinese education

SIBU: The United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Boards of Management Sibu Division, Sarawak will open a heritage museum next year to display the early development of Chinese education in Sarawak.

Project chairman Dr Hu Chang Lek said the museum will be located on the fifth floor of Wisma Hua Wen Du Zhong and is part of the association’s 40th anniversary celebration.

“We would like to collect as many historical articles, artefacts, and documents as possible to be displayed, especially on the early development of Chinese education in Sarawak.

“We want historical items such as old tables, chairs, typewriters, and so forth.

“If you have it, please do contribute to us. We also want pictures or copied pictures of historical buildings or maybe copied version of pre-colonial certificates,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Schools are also invited to contribute items for the museum, which will also have a reading room.

“This will be the project for the whole community and we really depend on the support from the members of the public,” he said, adding the opening ceremony is scheduled for June 30.

Association chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming said the museum exhibits will enable the people to understand the developments of and difficulties faced by Chinese-medium education.

“We really need contributions from the people. So, I urge those who have the materials to let us have them and display at the museum,” he said.
