KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee has called on the State Government to uphold the rule of law and respect the judgement of the Kota Kinabalu High Court regarding the appointment of the State Water Department director, Datuk Amarjit Singh.

In his statement yesterday, Yong, who is also Sabah Progressive Party president, said that this is a clear and definite law contained in the Sabah Water Supply Enactment 2003 that the government has no excuse to be ignorant of.

“I hail the Kota Kinabalu High Court’s judgment that the appointment of Amarjit in August 2018 is in contravention of Section 3 of the Water Supply Enactment 2003. Section 3 of the Enactment stipulates that.…”there shall be established an authority called the State Water Authority. There shall be such number of officers as may be necessary or expedient for the due administration of this Enactment, who shall be appointed by the State Public Service Commission from amongst the members of the State Public Service to run the State Water Department,” said Yong.

Yong added that the Sabah Public Service has enough qualified officers to helm the Water Department.
