PUTRAJAYA: The termination of analogue television broadcasting in northern and eastern states in Peninsular Malaysia on the night of Oct 14, will mark the complete switch to the ‘myFreeview’ digital transmission across the peninsula.

In a statement issued today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), said the scheduled transition follows the discontinuance of analogue transmissions in central and southern states in the peninsula, on Sept 30.

The same transition in Sabah and Sarawak, is scheduled to take place on Oct 31, and will herald the historic shift of the entire country towards digital broadcasting, while marking the end of analogue transmissions offered for free in Malaysia since 1963.

The northern and eastern states in Peninsular Malaysia comprise Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.

“The myFreeview digital television broadcast promises sharper images, high quality sound and interactive television services which will push forward the economic, social and education needs of the country and its citizens,” the MCMC said.

The digital service will enable viewers to enjoy television, radio, online applications and interactive learning broadcasts provided through 15 television stations and six radio stations, including TV1, TV2, TV3, NTV7, 8TV, TV9, TV Al Hijrah, and Bernama News Channel (BNC).

The MCMC encouraged viewers who have not yet switched to the myFreeview platform, to do so by getting a decoder and installing an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) aerial for existing television sets or by getting an Integrated Digital TV (IDTV) set which needs to be connected to an UHF aerial.

It added that free decoders will be distributed to eligible B40 (low-income group) households.

For more information on eligibility, type MYTV (space) DEKODER (space) (identity card number) and send to 15888 or visit www.mytvbroadcasting.my/B40 or contact the myFreeview customer service centre at 1-300-80-6988 or 1800-18-1088. – Bernama
