BN to announce Tanjung Piai candidate a week before nomination

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) will announce its candidate for the Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat by-election at least a week before nomination day, Nov 2.

UMNO secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the BN leadership was in the process of finalising the list of candidates from the component parties.

“Probably on Oct 26 or 27, or we can wait until Pakatan Harapan (PH) announces its candidate first,” he told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby here yesterday.

When asked on which BN component party would contest the seat that was previously contested by MCA, Annuar said BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would make the final decision.

The Tanjung Piai by-election in Johor will be held on Nov 16 while nomination will be on Nov 2.

The by-election is necessitated by the death of its incumbent MP, Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik of Bersatu, a PH component party, on Sept 21 due to heart complications. He was 42.

Meanwhile, Annuar said the opposition would not be presenting an alternative budget this year.

“The opposition does not need to present a budget each year, but we will present our policy of last year which still remains. If there is a need (to present a budget), we will do it next year,” he added.

Budget 2020 will be tabled in Parliament by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today. — Bernama
