Disrespecting Negaraku: Seven claim trial in Kuching court

KUCHING: Seven individuals, including a woman who refused to stand for the national anthem, Negaraku during an event last month, claimed trial in the Sessions Court here today.

They are Leong Shaow Tung, 43, Kon Tai Keong, 37 Bong Sak Sin, 44, Andrew Chong, 33, Phang Ngin Pen, 64, Tan Kok Chiang and Kui Ping Ping, both 46.

According to the charge sheet, the seven had on Sept 27, at about 7:15pm in Telang Usan Hotel, allegedly showed disrespect towards the National Anthem in public place by not standing up.

By doing that, they have committed an offence which is punishable under Section 8(3) of the National Anthem Act 1968, which is read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they will be liable to a fine of not exceeding RM100 or imprisonment of not exceeding a month.

All of the accused, who were represented by counsels Arthur Lee and Ian Lee, will appear again in court on Nov 11.
