KUCHING: The Indian community in Sarawak has never been considered as ‘pendatang’ (immigrants), said Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

She said this was pointed out by former Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

“Always remember this that all of us are all for one and one for all, we are all Sarawakians,” said Fatimah during the Colours of Unity yesterday.

She pointed out that in Sarawak many successful Indians have made names for themselves as professionals in various careers.

“Under the Sarawak Indian Women Association (Siwa), they have specially produced a book about Sarawak Indian women who are professionals, who are successful Indians in various careers. From humble beginnings, some of them have achieved great heights in various professions, and have contributed a lot to our state as well as to our country,” she said.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr Lalitha Vimala, who started as a director at Harina Consultancy Services, but her love for fashion and creativeness made her venture into fashion, in particular the saree businesses and has taught people like us (non-Indians) the easiest way to wear saree in just less than 30 minutes. These are among Indians who live in Sarawak considered very exemplary, the ones who contribute to their own successful people in Sarawak.”

The Colours of Unity revolved around three themes – Traditional Bollywood, Bollywood Fusions, and Bollywood High Fashion.
