KUCHING: Police have revealed that an Indonesian man was arrested last week after he was found carrying a huge amount of drugs with an estimated street value of RM543,700.

Speaking to reporters today, Sarawak Deputy Commissioner of Police Dato Dev Kumar revealed that the 32-year-old man was caught in Third Mile area, Jalan Rock on Oct 10.

He also revealed that police found crystal chunks believed to be methamphetamine – locally known as syabu – weighing 10.580 kg and 980 pieces of Eramin 5 pills in a sling bag on the suspect.

They are estimated to worth RM529,000 for syabu, and RM14,700 for Eramin 5.

“Preliminary drug test results on the man revealed that he was positive of amphetamine and methamphetamine drugs. He will be remanded until Oct 16,” he added.

The largest ever drug seizure in Sarawak was made in 2017, when police seized RM3.4 million worth of syabu and ecstasy pills from a drug trafficking ring here in Kuching.

Dev commented that the case will be investigated under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The suspect is believed to have used Sarawak as a transit point before transporting the drugs to Indonesia.

“We believe that the drugs came from other countries before being brought to Indonesia. We also think the drugs also came to Sarawak from Peninsular Malaysia,” said Dev.

The suspect, who hails from Balai Karangan, Sekayam in West Kalimantan, was arrested by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters and the Serian District Police Headquarters.
