KOTA KINABALU: Two fishermen were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for carrying out illegal fish bombing activity near Pulau Gaya, yesterday morning.

MMEA director Maritime Rear Admiral Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said the arrests were made following a complaint received by the agency of an illegal fish bombing activity taking place near the island at 9.45am.

“A vessel was immediately deployed to the said location and upon arrival, MMEA personnel spotted a suspicious green pump boat with two men on board. Upon further inspection, we discovered that the fishermen did not have any valid documents on them,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Both fishermen, in their 40s, were taken to the MMEA jetty in Sepanggar for further investigation.

The case is now being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Port and Harbour Enactment 2002.
