MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) yesterday donated 300 saplings to 30 schools here in conjunction with Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri District’s State-Level Tree Planting Day celebration.

The saplings were distributed during a ceremony at SMK Lutong by Cr Dr Vincent Huang who represented Miri mayor Adam Yii.

In a speech read by Dr Huang, Yii touched on the importance of conserving the environment and preserving the eco-system.

“The environment is a very important system in our daily lives. The rapid development has to some extent come at the expense of some environmental elements such as plants and wildlife.”

Yii added the tree-planting programme to mark Tree Planting Day which falls on Oct 20 every year is one of the initiatives by MRC Miri District to bring awareness to the public about the importance of preserving and conserving the environment, in line with policy of sustainable environmental development.

He also highlighted that primary and secondary schools as well as public and private institutions of higher learning have shown active participation in the programme, citing SK Tudan and SMK Lutong as schools which had included the programme as part of their official calendars.

MRC Miri District second vice chairperson Liza Chai, MRC Miri District Health and Community Services chairwoman Dr Uma Devi and SMK Lutong principal Michael Bus were among those present.
