KUANTAN: A magistrate was remanded for five days yesterday to help in investigations for allegedly accepting bribes so that a suspect in a cigarette smuggling case will not go to jail.
The remand for the 38-year-old magistrate, who was attached to a court in Pahang, was issued by Magistrate Tengku Eliana Tuan Kamaruzaman at the Kuantan Court here yesterday from yesterday until Oct 27.
The man, who wore a white shirt, was taken to the Kuantan Court Complex at 11.20am.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Azam Baki, when met, in the compounds of the Kuantan Court Complex, confirmed the remand.
“Indeed, we have received information (on corruption involving the Judiciary) and this may be one of them,” he said succintly.
On Oct 15, MACC was reported to have received 20 information over corruptions involving the Judiciary from early January until August this year.
The case was investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 which provided jail not exceeding 20 years and fine not less than five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. — Bernama
