KAPIT: United Chinese Association (UCA) Kapit has been praised for being a platform to unite the various clan-based associations here towards greater unity.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit said UCA Kapit, as an umbrella body for nine clan-based associations, serves to unite the local Chinese community while carrying out various cultural activities.

“UCA Kapit serves as a vital link to unite the Chinese associations together, and I hope these associations in turn will give their full support to UCA Kapit.

“Living in a plural society, it is important that we uphold the spirit of friendship, cooperation, mutual respect and tolerance,” he said during the installation ceremony for the new 2019-2020 committee of UCA Kapit here recently.

During the function, he called on the Chinese community here to continue giving their support to the Sarawak government and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the fact that Sarawak was the first state in the country to recognise United Examination Certificate (UEC) – allowing holders to enrol into Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and also join the state civil service – showed that its current leaders cared for the community.

Jamit later announced a grant of RM10,000 for UCA Kapit to run its activities.

UCA Kapit’s committee for the 2019-2020 term comprises Sng Geok Yien as chairperson, Kong Sien Hua (deputy chairperson), and Kapitan Yiap Yi Hoo, Kapitan Ling Hang Ping and Penghulu Wong Kie Ing (vice-chairpersons).

Teo Tian Chai is secretary assisted by Lau Sui Nai, while Kong Chok Yong is its treasurer assisted by Kong Sien Chi.

The committee members are Tiong Siew Chong and Wong Mee Ing (general affairs), Tiong Kiu Lan and Ho Chew Ming (welfare), Teoh Say Beng and Tan Kian Kiong (education).
