MIRI: About 94 per cent of Miri Vocational College students obtain jobs after graduating from the institution.

College director Choo Siak Lan said this proves that the graduates are relevant and are the industry’s top choice in hiring highly skilled workers.

She added that most of the graduates secured a job after they completed ‘On Job Training’ (OJT) at a company.

“Most graduates get jobs after OJT when the company feels the students are really qualified and have the skills needed by the company.

“However, some of these 94 per cent, after working for a long time, feel the need to pursue higher education,” she told The Borneo Post in an interview during the Sarawak Northern Zone Technical  Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Roadshow at the college here recently.

She said the college’s objective was to ensure that 70 per cent of its students could enter the workforce after graduation.

She also said she had never encountered the problem of students not being able to pursue proficiency because most of those who chose TVET in the college had a tendency to do well in their field of interest.

“For me if the students are really interested in the skills, it would not be a problem for them to follow the modules offered at the college. However, if a student is interested in fashion but we encourage him to take up electronics, it is not possible.

“Sometimes the problems we face are parents when they send their children to the college but their children are not interested in TVET, this can be a bit of a problem,” she said.

However, according to Choo, that interest can be gradually shaped.
