Rubber planting scheme a success

MARUDI: Participants of a block rubber planting scheme from Rumah Jimbau Ena, Sg Gudang near here are happy that their rubber trees are now ready for tapping.

The project, involving 51 participants, was started in 2014 under the Agriculture Department at a cost of RM2.752 million.

Mulu assemblyman Dato Gerawat Gala expects more longhouse folks will join the scheme as it has proven to be successful.

He said participants are given assistance in the form of land clearing, seedlings, fertilisers and other necessary materials.

The deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly added that the scheme is one of the projects of the government to help the rural people raise their income.

Gerawat was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Rubber Block Planting (RBP) course at Rumah Jimbau Ena, Sg Gudang yesterday.

He advised the longhouse folk to go into cash crop cultivation like planting pineapples which grow well in their area to supplement their income.

Others speaking at the ceremony were Iban community Leader for Poyut/Lubok Nibong, Pemanca Randi Bundan, and Tua Rumah Jimbau Ena.

Present were Marudi district officer Mackos Sibong, Marudi District Council chairman Edward Mendai, Miri Division Agriculture and Development assistant officer Alex Ding, SAO Nancy Abau, JKR engineer Mohd Safuan Abdullah and Marudi agriculture officer Sima Lait.
