KUCHING: Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) is seeking cooperation from the people in Kapit to conserve water through prudent usage during the current upgrading works on its water treatment plant there.

A JBALB spokesman said the upgrading works were part of the department’s ongoing efforts to provide better-quality water to the consumers in Kapit.

“The department, which comes under the Ministry of Utilities, is working hard to strengthen and reinforce water supply throughout rural Sarawak and to carry out interventions works to resolve immediate water supply issues.

“The department has issued an official statement that we are carrying out general maintenance and upgrading works on the desludging system, which started on Oct 28. The department is also carrying out intervention works such as repairing water tanks that are leaking, replacing ageing pipes and upgrading existing water treatment plants,” said the spokesman in a statement, issued in response to The Borneo Post report on Oct 30, in which DAP Sungai Kapit chairman Teng Poh Kiong expressed his dissatisfaction over the upgrading works by alleging that the department had failed to deliver clean and reliable water to the consumers.

According to the spokesman again, JBALB Kapit has been continuously sending water to the affected areas, especially those on high ground and at end points of the pipelines.

“Our water tankers will be on standby and ready to send water to the affected areas. “Any update will be channelled through JBALB Sarawak’s official Facebook page,” he added.
