KOTA KINABALU: Infrastructure Development Minister, Datuk Peter Anthony yesterday launched the elevated road intersection of the Jalan Penampang Bypass and Lido.

He hoped that with the launch, the heavy traffic congestion that occurs along the road could be eased.

Some 51,000 vehicles utilize the road within a period of 16 hours daily.

With the launch of the new service road, it is hoped that the traffic movement can be elevated from F class to C class, it was mentioned during the launch yesterday.

Peter said that the RM290 million project was ahead of the time stipulated for its completion.

He said that the project is supposed to be completed by July 23, 2020, and that it was 0.02 percent ahead of its scheduled completion.

The two junctions – the Jalan Penampang Bypass (J5) and Lido Intersection (J6) were completed two months ahead of time, he said.

The project will also include a u-turn flyover near the Heritage Plaza. Work on the u-turn is ongoing, he said.

At the same time, Peter also announced a flyover that would be constructed sometime next year for the Donggongon to Tambunan road.

He said that hopefully, this would resolve the traffic congestion at the area which is quite troublesome for road users.

Works on the Donggongon-Tambunan flyover is expected to take between two years and three years to complete.

With regards to the road works near Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Peter said that the works are 31 percent completed.
