KUCHING: Malaysian Parents Consultative Association (Mapim) Sarawak branch will leave it to the state government to announce the mechanism to help National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers settle their loans.

Its chairman Omar Immun said Mapim Sarawak welcomed the RM30 million allocation announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in the 2020 State Budget on Monday, and would wait for further announcements as to how the funds are to be distributed.

“I am of the opinion that it would be better to wait for the state government’s announcement on the best method to disburse the funds. The chief minister has previously said that it could take up to six months to study the best way to help graduates pay their PTPTN loans,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

Omar, however, stressed that any assistance in paying back outstanding loans should only benefit those who deserve such aid the most. He also voiced support for the government’s move to provide free school bus service, saying it will definitely help lower the financial burden of low-income families in urban areas.
