Customs seizes 1,481 cartons of contraband beer at Tabuan Desa in Kuching

KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has seized a total of 1,481 cartons of contraband beer at a housing estate in Tabuan Desa, here on Nov 6.

JKDM Sarawak director Dato’ Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said the seized contraband were estimated to worth RM38,340.72 which involved RM173,135.24 of tax.

“The different brands of beer were kept inside a (shipping) container,” said Sharifah Halimah in a press statement today.

According to her, the modus operandi of the smugglers to store and transport the contraband in the neighbourhoods were to confuse the authorities.

JKDM believed that the items were smuggled into the country and was intended for the local market here.

The raid was carried by the department based on their investigation and surveillance in the neighbourhood.

The seized items are currently being stored at the department’s warehouse for further action.

The case will be investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
